3D CT Scan

3D CT Scan

3D CT Scan

A 3D Computerized Tomography (CT) scan is an advanced imaging technique that provides detailed cross-sectional images of inside of the mouth, allowing for a three-dimensional view.

What It Is

  • Imaging Technique:  A CT scan uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed images of internal structures of the mouth.
  • 3D Reconstruction:  Unlike traditional X-rays that provide flat images, a CT scan compiles multiple cross-sectional images to create a three-dimensional representation.

How It Works

  • Patient Preparation:  The patient will be asked to stand with chin strapped to a support.
  • Image Acquisition:
    – X-Ray Rotation: The scanner contains an X-ray that rotates around the patient, taking multiple images from different angles.
    – Detector Arrays: These images are captured by detectors on the opposite side of the machine.
  • Data Processing:  Computer processes the data from the X-ray images and reconstructs them into cross-sectional slices.
  • 3D Visualization:  Software can further combine these slices into a three-dimensional image, allowing for detailed examination of complex structures.

Applications

  • Diagnosis:  CT scans are used to diagnose various conditions.
  • Dental Imaging:  In dentistry, 3D CT scans (often referred to as Cone Beam CT or CBCT) are particularly useful for implant planning, examining jaw structure, and assessing dental issues.

Benefits

  • High Detail:  CT scans provide more detailed images than regular X-rays, making them valuable for accurate diagnosis.
  • Speed:  The scanning process is relatively quick, often taking only a few minutes.
  • Non-Invasive:  The procedure is non-invasive and typically requires no recovery time.
